¡hola!
Viikko sitten saavuin tähän pikkukaupunkiin Atlantin rannalle, Uruguayn talveen ja tuuliseen meri-ilmastoon. Bussimatkaa tänne ja isäntäperheen tapaamista edelsivät hurjan pitkä mutta yllättävän nopeasti kulunut lentomatka sekä Montevideossa vietetyt yksi iltapäivä ja yö.
Matka tänne yli 13 000 kilometrin päähän kotoa alkoi viikko sitten torstaina, Helsinki-Vantaalla mua saattamassa olivat perhe ja pari ystävääni Helsingistä. Kentällä sain Suomen AFS:n edustajalta lentolippuni, Uruguayn oleskelulupaa varten tarvittavat asiakirjat sekä ohjeita lennolle. Pikkuhiljaa kaikki kanssani samalla lennolla lähtevät AFS-vaihtarit olivat koossa, kaksi meistä Uruguayhin ja kuusi Argentiinaan. Halasimme lujasti perheitämme ja ystäviä, kuljimme turvatarkastuksen läpi ja seikkailu oli valmis alkamaan.

| Adventure awaits |
A week ago I arrived here in this small town by the coast to the Atlantic Ocean, to Uruguayan winter and the different climate by the sea. Before taking the bus here and meeting my host family there were really long flight as well as a day and overnight in Montevideo.
The journey here, over 13 000 kilometres from home, started a week ago on Thursday,at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport saying goodbye to me were my family and a couple of my friends from Helsinki. There I got my boarding passes, all the papers needed for the residence permit of Uruguay as well as advice for the flight from a representative of AFS Finland. Soon all the AFS-students leaving by the same flight with me showed up, two of us to Uruguay and six to Argentina. After hugs for our loved ones, we all went thourgh the security check and the adventure was about to begin.

Pariisin ja Sao Paulon jälkeen Montevideo ja AFS:n vapaaehtoiset siellä odottivat meitä. Bussi vei meidät Montevideon keskustassa sijainneeseen pieneen kotoisaan hostelliin, jossa me kaikki 11 ympäri maailmaa Urguayhin saapuneet vaihtarit vietimme yhden yön ennen isäntäperheisiin matkustamista ympäri Uruguayta. Ajoimme pitkin rannikkoa kaupungin keskustaan, kuinka kauniit meri ja hiekkaranta täällä ovatkaan. Illalla käytiin porukalla AFS:n Uruguayn toimistossa, maistoin ensimmäistä kertaa matea, uruguaylaista perinteistä teen kaltaista yrttijuomaa,maistoin dulce de lechea ja söin paikallisten paljon suosimia hampurilaisten tapaan täytettyjä voileipiä. Myöhemmin kävelimme myös ympäri Montevideon vanhempaa kaupunkia ja saimme kasan Uruguayn kulttuurista kertovia lehtisiä. Aamulla ennen hostperheisiin lähtöä kävimme vielä lääkärissä ja verikokeissa Uruguayn oleskelulupaa varten, ja söimme täkäläiseen tapaan makean aamupalan. Pienen vaihtarimäärän etu on myös se, että porukka on nyt jo todella tiivis, ja kymmenet, sadat viestit vaihtuvat päivittäin.
After layovers in Paris and Sao Paulo the next stop was Montevideo, where the volunteers of AFS Uruguay were already waiting and looking forward to meet us. A bus took as to a small cozy hostel in the downtown Montevideo, where all 11 of us exchange students from all around the world spent a night before travelling around Uruguay to our host families. We drove by the coast to the city centre, how beautiful are the beach and the sea here! During the evening we all visited the AFS Uruguay office, I tasted mate, the traditional Uruguayan drink for the very first time, as well as dulce de leche, and we ate sandwiches kind of like hamburgers, that locals in Montevideo eat a lot. Later we also walked around the older part of Montevideo and got a bunch of papers telling about Uruguayan culture and way of life. At the morning before leaving to our host families we still had doctor appoinments and blood tests regarding to the residency permit. Nice thing about having only a few exchange students here is that we are really good friends already, and many messages are sent between us every day.

Tänne La Palomaan päästessäni pari ensimmäistä päivää kuluivat lähinnä nukkuen ja yrittämällä sopeutua täysin toisenlaiseen kulttuuriin, aikatauluun ja elämäntapaan. Minulle kulttuurishokki iski siis heti. Nyt viikon jälkeen alan kuitenkin olla vähitellen sinut täkäläisen elämäntavan kanssa, ja niin koulu kuin espanjakin sujuvat päivä päivältä vähän paremmin. Koulussa luokkakaverit auttavat mua ihanan paljon, ja opettajatkin yleensä tekevät parhaansa, että ymmärtäisin edes jotakin tunnin aiheesta. AFS-aluevalvojani pitää myös huolta, että olen ajan tasalla, välillä kun en vielä ymmärrä, vaikka jokin asia selitettäisiin espanjaksi kymmenen kertaa. Ensi viikolla alkavat kuoro ja musiikinhistorian tunnit. Kesäkin tulee tänne kohta, sen mukana kaupunki täyttyy kesäasukkaista ja vapaa-aika alkaa kulua rannalla. Kaikki on siis täällä hyvin. <3
When I arrived here in La Paloma, the first couple of days went by mostly sleeping and trying to adapt into a really different kind of a culture, timetable and way of life. For me the cultural shock came straight after the arrival. Anyway, now after a week I gradually start readjust and both Spanish and school work out better every day. In school my friends help me incredibly lot and usually also the teachers do their best that I would understand at least something about the topic of the lesson. My AFS contact person also is all the time making sure that I know what is going on, because sometimes I don't understand or get the point even if somebody explained me a thing in Spanish ten or more times. Next week I'll start in the choir and have music lessons at the school. The summer will be here soon too, it means that the town is going to be full of summer residents and the free time will be well spent at the beach. So everything just fine here. <3
