VIAJE A TACUAREMBÓ

Finally I'm going to write you about the trip we made to Tacuarembó with AFS. Already the day before travelling we met at the house of Nikkita of New Zealand in Canelones and after spending the night together and having fun waking up at 4am was kind of hard.

In Tacuarembó Fiesta de la Patria Gaucha and the nature reserve of Valle Eden were waiting for us. Patria Gaucha is an annual festival demonstrating the original culture of Uruguayan gauchos, and it was cool to learn more about that and at the same time about their traditions and everything behind the Uruguayan culture. The visit to Valle Eden was a surprise to us, or probably we just hadn't realized or listened when we were told about it, but at least the place was really pretty! And we saw a huge spider in the nature! I really enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside, the landscape there is almost as flat and wide as the prairies of North Dakota and Montana. Anyway, here are more cows and bulls in considerably smaller area.

I travelled to Tacuarembó only a day after changing family, now it's been already a month since that. I couldn't be happier with my new family! Everything is going really fine and I'm looking forward to what these three months I have left still have to offer for me. At least a trip to Buenos Aires is planned! <3 In the next post I will put photos from Montevideo, tell something more about my catholic high school and everyday life here.

FEBRERO

¡hola!

Finally I have you some pics and stories about all I was up to this past February. Three weeks were well spent with Karumbe, but still there was time for so many other cool things. I travelled to Costa Azul en Canelones to celebrate the birthday of Agnes, we went horseback riding and cooked food of our countries, had tons of fun and talked about everything until late night. Later I visited the office of AFS Uruguay in Montevideo and spent a day in the city with Barbara and Sand. Back here in La Paloma we have been enjoying the last days of beach before the classes start again. Still feels weird for me that here it's turning to autumn when in Finland the spring is on its way! I just can't believe the summer holidays here are almost over, they seemed to be long - almost four months! The time goes way too fast! Maybe it's better that I now lost track on counting how many days I have been here, it would only make me sad!

February in Uruguay and in many countries of Latin America means carnaval, and so the carnaval arrived to here to Rocha as well. All the pictures are from the opening of the carnaval of Rocha, even though I also took part in the carnaval of La Paloma and people kept throwing the water balloons and tickertape the whole week. In its entirety, the carnaval of Uruguay is the longest of the world, in Montevideo the celebrations start in the end of January and continue until the beginning of March. THe most important parts of the carnaval processions here are groups of candombe with cumparsas (dancers), murgas, and such as in Brasil, samba.

Kuten teistä lukijoista jotkut varmaan jo tietävätkin, tulen vaihtamaan isäntäperhettä. Uuteen perheeseeni kuuluvat äiti, isä, veli, isovanhemmat ja täti, ja he asuvat Pandossa reilun puolen tunnin päässä Montevideosta. Muutan huomenna heidän luokseen jättäen taakseni La Paloman, Atlantin rannikon ja ihanat ystäväni ja tuttavani täällä. Koulunikin vaihtuu julkisesta lukiosta yksityiseen katolilaiseen lukioon, jossa on koulupuvut.

As some of you probably already know, I will be changing my host family. My new family consists of mom, dad, brother, grandparents and an aunt, and they live in Pando about half an hour away from Montevideo. I will move there tomorrow and leave behind La Paloma, the Atlantic coast, all my friends and all the lovely people here. My school will also change from a public high school to private catholic one, where I will have an uniform. I don't want to write about the reasons of the change of family here publicly, but it was a mutual decision between me and my family, and we agreed that it's best thinking about my exchange year as whole. However, I would with pleasure talk with other exchange students who have been in similar situations, future exchange students, or any of you, if you have questions or want to talk about this, You can contact me in Facebook or by email marttajluoma@gmail.com. Anyway, I'm certainly looking forward this new opportunity to see also an other part of this country and experience new things, these four months I still have left are going to be amazing! I will be telling you more when I get to Pando and also upload photos from a trip to Tacuarembó with AFS on Sunday.

TWO WEEKS WITH SEA TURTLES

Karumbé is a turtle in the native language of guaraní, and exactly with turtles I and my three exchange student friends spent two weeks this month. Karumbé is also the name of an organization here in Uruguay, which mainly rescues, studies and spreads information about sea turtles, but as well works with tortoises and terrapins. Karumbé works in Montevideo, in La Paloma and in La Coronilla, near the nature reservation area of Cerro Verde. We took part in the project here in La Paloma, and the experience was really nice and we learned a lot. I have always liked biology and I enjoyed the opportunity to learn in a practical way by doing things. And what would be more fascinating than the ocean and all the living things in there.

When the turtle had to spend all the time in a pool, where the water doesn't change the same way as in the ocean, we cleaned the carapace every day. The head is covered so the turtle doesn't see anything and stays still.

The turtle "Año Nuevo" was able to return to the ocean the day we started in Karumbé, and "Ariel" stayed two weeks more, returning to its natural habitat on our last day as volunteers.

Ariel the green sea turtle we had in rehabilitation in Karumbé.

In the seas of Uruguay live five different species of sea turtles, but the most common is green sea turtle Chelonia mydas (tortuga verde). Such as the green sea turtle, all the species worldwide (total seven) are endangered, critically endangered or threatened. The biggest problem is all the waste in the ocean, especially plastic bags and abandoned fishnets. Also fishing of the turtles still occurs in some parts of the world. Turtles eat plastic bags by accident because those are similar to their food and get bogged down in the fish nets. "Ariel" was in rehabilitation in Karumbé over two months. My Hungarian friend and her host family found it really suffered from the national park area of Cabo Polonio. A net tangled with waste had almost cut the front limbs and when founded, many infections had made the condition even worse. After two months "Ariel" eventually was able to return to the sea. What Karumbé is doing, is not catching turtles for fun or just wanting to make money, it is to try to help the sick turtles and the endangered individuals, so that they can return to the sea. And that way Karumbé is working on preventing disappearance of sea turtles in the oceans of the world.
