AFS END OF STAY ORIENTATION

Buen día, 

Viime viikonloppuna kokoonnuimme kaikki me nyt heinäkuussa kotiin palaavat vuosi- ja puolivuosivaihtarit Piriápolisiin rannikolle viettämään AFS:n loppuorientaatioleiriä. Mukaan tulivat myös kaikki helmikuussa tulleet vaihtarit, joille leiri oli mid stay -orientaatio vaihtovuoden puolivälissä sekä kaikki seuraavan lukuvuoden aikana Uruguaysta maailmalle lähtevät vaihto-oppilaat. Olen varmasti sanonut saman jo ihan jokaisen AFS-leiriviikonlopun jälkeen, mutta oli kyllä ihan parhaat kaksi päivää. En ikinä tule unohtamaan näitä ihmisiä, kokemuksia ja hetkiä. Voisin vaikka lainata islantilaista kaveriani tässä, eli "Estamos achicando el mundo", suomeksi: "Pienennämme maailmaa". Välimatkat ovat tietysti tuhansia kilometrejä, mutta toisen kulttuurin ja elämäntavan ymmärtäminen ja vaihtovuoden kokoinen yhteinen kokemus saa maailman tuntumaan pienemmältä ja auttaa uskomaan, että pienetkin asiat voivat tehdä maailmasta edes ihan vähän paremman paikan. 

Last weekend we had the AFS end of stay orientation camp in Piriápolis for all of us going now in July. All of the Uruguayan exchange students starting their adventure during the following year came to the camp as well as all the people who came in February and will continue until January, it was their mid stay orientation. I have probably said it after each and every one of AFS camps, but we had the best two days ever. I will never forget these people, these experiences or moments. I could cite my Icelandic friend here: "Estamos achicando el mundo", in English: "We are making the world smaller". Of course the distances stay long, thousands of kilometers, but understanding another culture and lifestyle and a a huge experience together, such as an exchange year makes the world feel smaller and helps to believe even the small things can make the world at least a little bit better. 

Piriápolis on varmasti yksi Uruguayn kauneimmista paikoista. Voisinpa aina asua tuolla. Äiti ja iskä, miten ois jos muutankin tänne? :)

Tässä yritetään tota nostaa tota taustalla olevaa kukkulaa... 

Suurin osa leiristä kului ryhmissä, me nyt kohta kotiin palaavat, vaihtovuotensa puolivälissä olevat ja uruguaylaiset tulevat vaihtarit erikseen. Keskusteltiin ja kirjoitettiin kokemuksista ja mietittiin kotiinpaluuseen liityviä haasteita, kuten käänteistä kulttuurishokkia, sitä, kuinka itse on muuttunut ja kuinka ehkä myös kaveriporukat tai perhe kotimaassa ovat muuttuneet. 

Most of the time we spent divided into groups according to the phase of our exchange programs. The students going home in one, the students in the middle of their experience in one and the students leaving for an exchange year in one group. We discussed various topics, such as the challenges of going back home, reverse cultural shock, how you changed and how maybe also your family or friends back in your country have changed.

Nuo kaksi päivää olivat ikävän ja haikean hyvästelyn kyyneleitä, tunteellista oli erityisesti kirjottaa itselle kirje koko vuoden aikana koetuista asioista ja ihmisistä joista on erityisen kiitollinen. Bussiterminaalissa Montevideossa itkettiin ja halattiin ja päätettiin että pian nähdään. Onneksi joitakin vaihtarikavereista näen vielä synttäreilläni ja osan kanssa myös lennän Pariisiin asti. En halua miettiä, miten vaikeaa tulee olemaan hyvästellä heidät sitten Pariisissa ja tietysti perhe täällä lentokentällä.

Those two days were full of tears and goodbyes, especially emotional was to write a letter to oneself telling about all the people and all the things that one is especially thankful for. At the bus terminal in Montevideo we hugged, cried a little and decided that we'll meet soon. Luckily I'll meet some of my exchange students friends still at my birthday party and with some we are flying together to Paris. I don't even want to think about what it's going to be like to say goodbyes then in Paris to all of them and of course what it's going to be like to say goodbye to my family at the airport.

TREINTA Y TRES

¡hola!

Vihdoinkin ehdin kirjoittamaan teille jo ihan kesäkuun alussa Pohjois-Uruguayhin tekemästäni reissusta. Toivottavasti kuvista saa jonkinlaisen mielikuvan, vaikka paikan päällä maisemat olivatkin vielä paljon nätimmät.

Kesäkuun ensimmäisenä lauantaina heräsin aikaisin ja lähdimme hostisän kanssa Treinta y Tresiin, joka on departamento Pohjois-Uruguayssa. Reissuun lähti kokonainen ryhmä hostisän kavereita ja muita ja kaikki olivatkin kovasti kiinnostuneita Suomesta, minusta ja erityisesti siitä, miksi valitsin Uruguayn kohdemaakseni. (Tarkkaan en ole laskenut mutta ihan varmasti olen vastannut tuohon kysymykseen kuluneiden 10 kuukauden aikana ainakin 117 kertaa). 

Vietimme päivän Quebrada de los Cuervos - nimisessä kansallispuistossa patikoiden ja illalla kun palattiin, söimme tietysti tuttuun tapaan asadoa. Parasta, että jonkun mielestä mun espanja kuulostaa jo ihan paikalliselta ja että olen hyvin oppinut sopeutumaan porukkaan ja erilaisiin tapoihin! Nämä ovat tietenkin pieniä asioita, mutta tulee aina silti niin hyvä mieli, kun joku vaikka kehuu kielitaitoa, varsinkin kun aluksi se ei ollut niin helppoa. 

Finally I get to write you about a trip to Northern Uruguay I did already in the beginning of June. I hope you are able to get some kind of picture from the photos, even though the landscape is so much more beautiful when you see it with your own eyes.

On the first Saturday of June I woke up early and left to Treinta y Tres, to the North of Uruguay with my host dad. With us travelling was a big group of friends of host dad and others. Everybody was really interested to know things about Finland, about me and about why I chose to come to Uruguay. (I haven't counted but I'm sure I have answered this particular question already like 117 times during these past 10 months).

We spent the day in a national park called Quebrada de los Cuervos hiking and later, eating asado. I was so happy to hear someone saying my Spanish already sounds like Uruguayan and I have learned to adapt to group and manners really well! Those are such small things but it still always makes my day when somebody mentions them.

Joku reissussa ollut mummu ehti jo tekemään huomion, että "on se hyvä kun on tytöllä punainen takki niin ei pääse metsässä eksymään!" :D

Alueen ilmastossa erikoista oli sen erilaisuus Uruguayn ilmastoon yleensä. Ilmasto on Uruguayssa normaalisti subtrooppinen, mutta tämän kansallispuiston alueella lämpötilat ja ilmankosteus ovat hieman tavallista korkeammat, ja kuulin, että noissa metsissä on tavattu esimerkiksi tukaaneja, jotka ovat trooppisten alueiden asukkeja. Yhteensä Quebrada de los Cuervosin alueella elää noin 160 eri eläinlajia. Myös matessa käytetty yerba mate -kasvi kasvaa Treinta y Tresin alueella.

An interesting thing about the climate of this area was its difference compared to the climate of the rest of Uruguay. In Uruguay, the climate is normally subtropical, but in this national park, temperatures and humidity levels are higher than usually, and I heard how they have met toucans that live in warmer tropical zones. Altogether about 160 species of animals live in this protected area of Quebrada de los Cuervos. Also the plant used in mate, yerba mate, grows in Treinta y Tres.

Aloitin juuri postauksen myös AFS:n loppuorientaatioleiristä, ja yritän saada sen pian valmiiksi ennen kuin nyt tässä heinäkuussa viimeisten viikkojen ohjelma täyttää päiväni kokonaan. Paljon kuvia ja terveisiä olisi myös viimeiseltä koulupäivältä, niitä löytyy Instagramista. 

I just started a post about the AFS end of stay camp we had recently, and I will try to get it done soon before my last days here will make me busy. I'd also have a lot to tell and lots of photos to show from the last school day this past Friday. You can find some of them in Instagram.
